Selecting Fabric For Your Dynamic Life in the Lab

Our team at Amorsui learned from talking to women scientists from all fields that protection and high performance is a must when selecting clothing for working in the lab.

To make your life easier, we've created a guide on how you can find the clothing that fits your needs and how to care for your garments, starting with the most essential part of garment which is its fabric. Next time you are out shopping, look at the tags on your potential clothing purchases to find what you need.

Stretch

Women scientists do not work on a clean bench. We are consistently performing a wide range of motions to conduct experiments. A full range of motion to perform different functions is therefore essential. That is why we need to look for garments made from fabrics that allow us to do what we do best.

Stretchable fabrics are often synthetic, which can expand 2-way or 4-way. A 2-way stretch fabric incorporates selvedge, allowing fabric to stretch in one direction. A 4-way stretch fabric, such as spandex or elastane, expands in both the crosswise and lengthwise directions.

AmorSui's garments are made of a combination of woven and knit fabrics consisting of up to 5% spandex to provide the flexibility that women scientists need in the lab

Protective properties

Common fabrics such as regular knit and cotton will not protect you in an explosive or chemical spill accident. That is why you should look for fabrics that are specially treated with chemicals that will provide chemical and fire-retardant properties. AmorSui hand-selected the softest fire- and chemical-resistant fabrics available on the market to make your life easier.

Water Repellent

Fabric with this property is often treated with a hydrophobic chemical coating such as fluoropolymer. This coating can be degraded over time, especially if the garments in question are washed with harsh detergents. We recommend gentle washing with mild soap to maintain their water-repellent properties To restore this water-repellent behavior, garments can be treated using a spray-on or wash-in procedure.

Wrinkle-resistant fabric

Save time ironing your clothes by choosing polyester, nylon, acrylic, and olefin-based garments. These fabrics are treated with N-methylol or Dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneurea (DMDHEU), where cellulose chains are cross-linked to stop the molecules from coming into contact with water or other environmental stresses.

Stain Resistance

This type of special fabric is coated with a barrier surface that keeps spills right on the surface where they are easily wiped away. For problematic spills, you can clean them thoroughly without worrying that soapy water residue will penetrate the fabric.

AmorSui's Bioleta line will incorporate fabric that is coated with this special property and will be impermeable to blood, urine, and biological samples to protect women scientists and female medical professionals while they work.

Meet the Founder & CEO - Beau Wangtrakuldee

Beau Wangtrakuldee, former PhD chemist, was burned in a chemical spill during an experiment to create a new anticancer drug. Although she was wearing proper PPE, the toxic chemical burned right through her lab coat onto her leg. After she was unable to find proper-functioning PPE in women's sizes, Beau took the initiative to found AmorSui, to ensure that no one has to put their life on the line in ill-fitting, unprotective, and improper-working PPE.
